This weekend marks the end of our summer in the Napa Valley. Despite hitting temperatures of over 100 degrees some weeks (which is really high for San Francisco residents like us), we�ve had a great time with projects around the house (stay tuned next month for news on our herb garden that is in the works), time with friends and family, and the ability to sneak away for early weekday afternoons at various wineries. One of our favorite visits was to Ladera on Howell Mountain in Angwin. I picked the one week that Nicole Duncan was out of town, but Bret was a great host and did an excellent job of walking through the amazing history of the winery and wines, and showing us around the place. Ladera�s winery was built in 1886, (apparently it was one of the first 15 wineries in the valley), and it�s been through a handful of owners over the years. The Stotesbery�s have been there since 2000 (I think � I was enjoying the wines so much, that I might be off on those dates) and they�ve really made their mark. Next time you�re in the Napa Valley, I would put Ladera on your must-visit list. Just this week, we spent a perfect afternoon at another one of the valley�s higher elevations, at School House Vineyard on Spring Mountain. Talk about history! John Gantner is a 6th generation San Franciscan and his family has been coming up to Napa for over a century. John is the second generation to run the vineyard, after his father, who I believe made his first bottle of School House Pinot in 1956 or 1957 (again, don�t hold me to it). While sitting on their porch, overlooking the grape vines, Nancy shared pictures of a vertical tasting they had with 50+ years of wine (dating back to 1959). She said that what they learned from that event is that it�s really the terroir that drives the flavors of the wine; in 50+ years of different winemakers, methods, etc, each bottle really held up against the last and had such strong similarities. All in all, a wonderful afternoon with Nancy and John and we�d highly recommend a visit. Great people and delicious wines! One of our favorite summer activities has been the summer concert series in Calistoga at Pioneer Park. Each Thursday, from 6:30 to 8:30pm, you�ll find about half the town and a fun band, playing tunes, eating fine food and drinking wines. Plus, great dancing opportunities for the toddler in your life. Over the past month I have updated 247 wineries... which I believe is a record amount of updates in a month! Thanks to all the wineries who provided their wine release information.
