WineRelease.com's November 15, 2024 Monthly Newsletter. Sorry for the tardy delivery.
This month we had 251 winery updates and 97 wineries releasing wine. 257 is the most updates ever and 97 wine releases is the greatest number of November winery releases.
And.... WineRelease.com now has 3,000 winery responses! This is the month for records!
Last month, my daughter had a week off from school, so we decided to visit Paris. Of course, I couldn’t resist stopping by my favorite wine bar, Sapiens.
During my time living in Paris, I often brought Napa Valley wines back with me to Paris to share with fellow wine enthusiasts.
When I visited Sapiens, Thierry, the owner, had been holding six bottles of my Napa Valley Cabernet for me.
I told him it was time to open them, and he suggested we do it on Thursday since most of his staff would be there that afternoon and evening.
So here were the Napa Cabs (and one Selene Merlot).
I selected these wines to highlight Napa Valley’s aged Cabernets, since Sapiens primarily focuses on Burgundy.
They typically carry only 6 to 18 bottles of Bordeaux, mainly for the tourists, as they put it.
Here are some of the wine comments from the Sapiens staff:
- 2012 Frediani Vineyard Selene Merlot "Soft and elegant"
- 2005 Lamborn Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon "doesn't taste aged, held up well", "My favorite followed by Janzen"
- 2013 Napa Valley Rutherford Foley Johnson Cabernet Sauvignon
- 2017 Napa Valley Watermark Cabernet Sauvignon "Watermark and Janzen are different than the others". "The oak is beautiful", "The Watermark is a different style compared to the others", "Favorite is Watermark although Janzen is elegant but feels like there is some stem inclusion."
- 2010 Napa Valley St. Helena Parry Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon "My favorite", "Parry has a little sweetness... yummy", "Parry is good but not memorable", "Would go great with duck."
- Janzen Cabernet Sauvignon (I don't recall the vintage) "I prefer the Janzen then the Parry", "I prefer the Janzen then Foley", "Elegant expressiveness without the high level of alcohol"
It was fun tasting the wines and hearing the staff comments and the chef/owner of Cafe Varenne also stopped by to enjoy the wines. Interestingly, no one asked about critic scores— the most common comment was about the high alcohol percentage wines.
In keeping with the "Come Over October" theme of having friends/family over to share wine, I have updated my wine hosting recommendation page and downloadable wine tasting document. Click here to visit the page.
Hosting a wine tasting, whether as a one-time event or a regular gathering, is one of the most enjoyable and effective ways to refine your palate and expand your wine knowledge. Engaging with different varietals, regions, and styles of wine allows you to experience firsthand the complexities and subtleties that each wine has to offer.
By organizing tastings, you create an opportunity to explore various flavor profiles, aromas, and textures while discussing your impressions with fellow wine enthusiasts. This interactive learning experience not only deepens your understanding of wine but also fosters a sense of community among participants.
Additionally, hosting regular tastings enables you to track your progress over time, helping you identify your preferences and discover new favorites. Wine tastings provide a delightful way to enhance your appreciation of this timeless beverage. Plus, the social aspect adds an element of fun and camaraderie that makes each gathering memorable. Click here to download my .pdf wine tasting sheet that includes single and double blind tasting sheets and label template.
Please forward this newsletter to a wine friend so we can increase our audience. Much appreciated!
And now, onto the wine releases...
